Beginning in 1965, the U.S. Mint introduced **Special Mint Sets**. These sets contained specially treated proof-like coins, including the Kennedy half dollar, that were struck with higher quality finishes than regular circulating coins. The 1965 SMS Kennedy half dollar consist of 40% silver.
